The ANZAC War Memorial, erected in the 1930, Port Said, Egypt
The ANZAC War Memorial, torn down during civil war in the 1950s
For The Horses Stayed Behind exhibition I was able to borrow the only remaining fragment of bronze from the original ANZAC War Memorial in Egypt. It belongs to the Australian War Memorial Museum. In New Zealand there is a Maori tradition in museums; when an object of particular cultural significance is put back into a collection room after being on show it is put to sleep with a ceremony and usually song. Conversly the object is woken up when it is brought out for display. I'd like to work with the Hetete family in New Zealand on developing an appropriate ceremony for this bronze fragment. It's important to me that I work in proper consultation with the appropriate people so as not to misappropriate customs.
