John Constable, The Hay Wain, 1821. The National Gallery, London
Estella Castle and I have a collaborative exhibition in London coming up mid 2016. As our art practices have a couple of really interesting cross-overs we decided to choose a painting as a starting point. Estella works with ideas around the construct of Nature and often works with historical pastoral themes. I'm really interested in the social and political structures underneath any subject really, so working with a historical painting as a point of departure works well for me too. In late Dec 2015 we took a trip to The National Gallery and chose The Hay Wain by John Constable. Such an English choice for two Kiwi gals. We are including the site where the original painting is exhibited in our explorations and we will visit Suffolk - the subject of the painting - in mid January.
