The performative elements of my art practice usually take a back seat firmly in my mind, when in reality they are front and center stage. I always think about my audience, always try to see things from their perspective, to discover new audiences and secret audiences. This oud (a middle eastern instrument made from donated NZ horse hair) has been played publicly only twice. I intend to expand the project and take the oud to be played as part of the ANZAC ceremonies in Turkey and the Middle East. It will be in the playing and performing that this instrument will become an art object. It is still sitting on the cusp.
